The reading and the lecture both discuss the use of ethanol fuel as an alternative to gasoline. While the article claims that it is not a good replacement for gasoline and provides three arguments, the professor refutes, saying that ethanol fuel is a good alternative to the gasoline and contradicts each of the author's claims.
First, the article argues that ethanol fuel will lead to global warming as its burning releases carbon dioxide. However, the professor explains that ethanol fuel production requires planting corn that is used in the process of production. Therefore, while the ethanol fuel burning releases carbon dioxide, the increase in corn planting will remove it from the atmosphere.
Secondly, the article claims that the use of corn and plants in manufacturing ethanol will decrease the amount of food for animals. The professor in the lecture challenged this point by stating that ethanol can be produced by the cellulose found in the parts of the plant that are not eaten by animals. So, by using those parts, the animal food will not be affected by producing ethanol.
Finally, the reading posits that the price of ethanol will be increased in the future when the government stops the tax subsidies given to ethanol companies. This point is contradicted by the professor. He suggests that ethanol producers will increase their production when there are enough customers buying it. As a result of this, the price of ethanol will go down.
