The passage states that population of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been declining and provides three hypotheses of this decreasing. The lecturer, nevertheless, explains that people do not know what kills yellow cedar and none of these hypotheses are adequate.
First, the reading claims that insect parasites are the reason of declining in the population of the yellow cedar. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that these species of tree are more resistance than another species. The professor contends that the yellow cedar has powerful chemical poisons that damage the seek of the insects and thus it is unlikely that yellow cedar suffers from insects parasites.
In addition, the article posits that yellow cedar decline may be caused by brown bears. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that there are areas that have no bears. According to the professor, there are no bears in North America but the yellow cedar is declining. So, bears are not responsible for declining of these trees.
Finally, the passage expresses that gradual changes of climate may be to blame the yellow cedar by changing the time of root growth. Quite on the contrary, the lecturer emphasizes that there are many trees in lower elevation, as well as, in higher elevation. We also learn that there are more trees in harsh conditions rather than in regular warm conditions.
