TPO 23 integrated writing

In the lecture, the professor asserts that the reasons behind the decline in the yellow cedar trees are still unknown. This refutes the reading, which states that there are three possible theories explain this decline.

First, the lecturer mentions that healthy yellow cedar trees are more resistant to damage caused by insects because they have strong chemical in their bark that protect them from beetle attack. She explained, also, that bark beetle attack only weak yellow cedar trees, which will die with or without the infection. This contradicts the article, which cites that the yellow cedar decline may be caused by insect parasites.

Second, although brow bears could cause damage to yellow cedar trees, the same rate of decline is happening in areas that do not contain bears, like islands. This weaken the theory, which proposes that bears are behind this decline in the yellow cedar population. On the other hand, the reading states that brow bear aggressive eating habits could have caused this reduction.

Finally, the speaker claims that if the frosting roots caused the decline in the yellow cedar trees, we should see most of the trees die in the elevation, where it is cold; however, most of the decline happened in low elevation areas, where it is warm. This challenges the article, which mentions that gradual changes of climate may be the cause of the decline.
