The reading discusses that the population of yellow cedar trees gradually decreased. The author listed three factors to support this issue. However, the lecture finds all the reasons inadequate and presents some evidence to refute all these hypotheses.
First, the reading passage finds out that insect parasites are responsible since they eat the bark of trees, indeed, the beetle larva feed on wood. In contrast, the speaker states that healthy trees are more much resistant to the beetle as their bark surface saturated with poisonous chemical material. As a matter of fact, the beetle attack on the damaged or sick trees. As a result, the author dismisses this viewpoint.
Furthermore, the author proposes that bears claw at the cedar trees to eat the sweet barks which contain lots of sugar and by this work, they weaken the cedar trees. On the contrary, the speaker casts doubt on this issue and asserts that beers claw at some trees. Also, there are no bears on the Island, hence, they cannot be a possible reason.
Last but not least, the author mentioned that the climate has been changed gradually, and these affected root systems of the cedar trees. On the other hand, the lecturer illustrated that dying trees in lower elevation in a warm place and despite the trees die in high elevation in cold weather so sensitive roots do not seem to be a potential claim. Therefore, the speaker rebuts this idea as well as other hypotheses.
