yellow cedar
Both the author and the lecturer discuss reasons causes declining yellow cedar population. The passage claims that there are some hypotheses explain this decline. The professor on the other hand, reject whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons.
First, both the author and the professor talk about insects attack on yellow cedar. According to the passage insect parasites, especially the cedar bark beetle is one major reason of reducing yellow cedar's population. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects the author's view and illustrate the idea that yellow cedar is resistant tree whose bark and leaves secret chemical poisons against insects. Thus, beetle can hurt trees that is already damaged, so insect cannot be the fundamental reason for diminishing of yellow cedar’s population.
Second of all, both the reading and the lecture discuss brown beer's influence on yellow cedar's population. The author argues that beers sometimes claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark, which contain a high sugar content, therefore beer's aggressive feeding habits may cause decline in yellow cedar’s population. However, the professor refutes this, saying that in islands, where there is not brown beer, decline of population is seen, so beer cannot responsible for reducing yellow cedar’s population.
Eventually, the passage and the lecture address the subject of climate change. The passage goes on to mention that root freezing leads to the tree damage and eventually kill it. In contrast, the professor points out that in areas with low elevation that is warm, this reducing in number of trees is conspicuous, so root frost cannot cause decline in yellow cedar’s population.
All in all, the author maintains that there are several reason discuss reduction in yellow cedar’s population, while the professor not only completely cast doubt on it, but he also demonstrates that these reasons cannot proof decrease in the tree’s population.
