In this set of materials, both the reading passage and the lecture deal with the remains of the actual tissues of Tyrannosaurus Rex. Regarding this topic, the author of the passage asserts that its fossils included the remains of the animals’ tissues: blood vessel, red blood cells, and collagen matrix. However, the lecturer contradicts the author’s assertion by saying that the three reasons described in the passage are skeptical.
First of all, according to the lecture, the presence of a flexible organic substance inside the channels cannot imply that the presence is the remains of blood vessels. When long ago an organism died, usually bacteria colonize empty areas in bones. Thus, it is more likely that the presence was resulted not from the dinosaur’s blood vessels but from bacteria. This counters the author’s view point that the branching channels inside the bones proves the existence of blood vessels in the bones.
Secondly, the lecturer goes on to say that the evidence about the red blood cells is unconvincing. Some researchers found the identical red spheres in other animal fossils at the same place. It reveals that the primitive animals did not have red blood cells when they were alive. This challenges the author’s claim that the presence of spheres in the bones resulted from red blood cells of the dinosaur.
Lastly, the lecturer maintains that it is unreliable that the scientists found that the dinosaur leg bond contained collagen. This is because collagen cannot sustain over 100,000 years, further the dinosaur disappeared 70 million years ago. Thus collagen not came from the dinosaur but came from the recent resources, such as scientists’ skins. This rebuts the author’s argument that the fact that collagen in the dinosaur leg bone indicates that it is the dinosaur’s.
