The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about the causes of Little Ice Age. Considering this, the author offers three reasons for Little Ice Age. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the ways the reading just discusses. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the options in the passage.
The first criticism of the reading against which the lecture argues is that the reason of the Little Ice Age was the Gulf Stream. As stated by the professor, the Gulf Stream can only affect Europe and north of America, but the Little Ice Age occurred widely in southern hemisphere like southern Africa, which the Gulf Stream had no effect on that area. So, it is a fallacious conclusion that the Gulf Stream is considered as one of the reasons of the Little Ice Age.
Moreover, unlike the passage which claims that volcanic eruption can be another reason of Little Ice Age, the professor illustrates that it is true that if volcanic eruption puts enough dust into the atmosphere, the weather can be cooler. However, there are some documents which are about sunset on that time, and there is no more report about the issue that the sunlight was hidden during that time. Therefore, volcanic eruptions were not strong enough to cause the cooler climate.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the passage that due to the decline in human populations before the Little Ice Age, more trees started growing up in the lands, which were used to utilize as agricultural lands, and as a result the greenhouse effect diminished, and the trees removed more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which led to reduction of weather temperature, saying that the human population grew back rapidly, and they started to cut off trees and use lands again. Accordingly, the forest did not last for a long time to cause global cooling of climate.
All in all, the professor maintains that the arguments in the reading are outdated, and new researches have indicated that the information in the passage is not convincing.
