As opposed to the three arguments suggests that Robert E. Peary has indeed reached the North Pole in the reading, the lecturer contends that these evidences are not solid and unconvincing.
First of all, although the reading states that the National Geographic Society did perform an investigation into Peary's records and equipment and announced that Peary had reached the North Pole, the lecturer claims that the investigation itself was not objective but conducted by some of Peary's close friends. Moreover, the investigation was used only about two days, which is prone to biased result. Hence, the investigation is not trustworthy and cannot be used to prove Peary's claim.
Secondly, the reading passage suggests that a recent expedition by Tom Avery made the same trek in less than that by Peary. However, the lecturer refutes that the conditions of them are totally different. Not only Tom Avery's expedition carried much less weight, especially the food was supplied by air plane instead of carrying by himself, but also the temperature condition is more favorable than Peary's. Consequently, it is not suitable to use Avery's record to support Peary's claim.
Last but not least, the third point of view in the reading suggests that it is possible to measure the Sun's position of photographs to support Peary's claim. However, the lecturer states that the photographs was taken over 100 years and therefore not suitable to prove. In fact, there photographs are most blurred and faded and were taken by an old camera. Therefore, these cannot used to prove the Peary's claim also.
