Both the reading material and the listening concentrate on whether Peary had reached the North Pole. Though the author offers three strong supports, the speaker disagrees with all these reasons for they are not convincing.
To begin with, the professor has a different view of the committee which the author thinks its declaring proves the truth of reaching North Pole. She points out that this committee is made of Peary’s friends and most of them offered lots of money for his travel. Moreover, this investigation just lasted two days which is too short to get a convincing result. So it cannot approve the truth of Peary’s travel.
Then, according to the passage, Tom Avery’s expedition can provide strong support for Peary’s claim. On the contrary, the speaker aruges it for there are some obvious differences. For example, Avery contains less weight because his food is transported by airplane, not like Peary who has to contain lots of food. What’s more, the weather condition is also different that Avery travelled when weather was suitable.
In the end, the author asserts the photographs can be a powerful evidence. It is true that people use the shadows of photos to detect locations, however, this technology requires the photos should be precise enough. As we all know, the photos taken by ancient cameras are too blurred to calculate the accurate location at Peary’s time. Thus, these photographs are not a confident source to support Peary’s claim.
