TPO 28 - Robert E. Peary was a well-known adventurer and arctic explorer who in 1909 set out to reach the North Pole. When he returned from the expedition, he claimed to have reached the pole on April 7, 1909. This report made him into an international celebrity.
The reading and the lecturer are both about Peary´s claim to have reached the North Pole in 1909. The author of the reading provides three supporting arguments. However, the lecturer challenges those three ones because she believes they are not convincing.
First of all, it is mentioned in the reading that a committee from National Geographic Society instructed a thorough investigation on Peary´s record and equipment. They then confirmed the validity of the claim. The lecturer, however, disproves the investigation report. She says that members of the committee are friends and supporters of Peary. Therefore they did not look into the records carefully which means that the report was bias and not reliable.
Secondly, the writer says that another similar expedition made by British explorer Tom Avery supports the accuracy of the claim. It is declared in the reading that Avery reached the North Pole in less than 37 days under the same conditions which Peary used to carry out the expedition. Therefore, that the latter arrived the Pole in 37 days is possible. In contrast, the lecturer rebuts this argument by noting that Avery carried less weight than did Peary. Besides, she contends that Avery conducted the trip under favorable weather conditions while Peary suffered much worse ones. Therefore, the conditions of the two trips are different which means they are not comparable.
Thirdly, the passage states that analysis of photos taken by Peary asserted the validity of his achievement. The lecturer, on the other, disagrees with this argument. She puts forth the idea that those photos are not adequate evidences because the quality of the photos was poor with faded and blurred shadow. As the result, they cannot be used to consolidate Peary´s declaration.
