TPO-30

In this set of materials, the reading describes the story of the “burning mirror”, a curved and polished copper surface, is just a myth. This huge mirror is assumed to be a Greek’s weapon to defend Roman attack. To this purpose, the author mentions three reasons to establish the authenticity of the story. On the other hand/ However, the lecturer finds all the mentioned reasons dubious, and presents some evidence to refute them all.

First of all, the author argues that Greeks couldn’t build such this huge parabolic mirror by using their current technology. Conversely, this was questioned by the lecturer as she states that due to the Greek’s developments and advancements in math during that period, it seemed feasible to construct this weapon by using a numerous small sheets instead of a large piece.

Furthermore, based on the reading passage the process of fire making on Roman ships was time-consuming process which also needed an unmoving target to be operated. On the contrary, the professor underlines that this assumption is right just about the wood not other components. There was a water proof material, pitch, as a coat on Roman’s ships and catched fire rapidly in seconds.

Finally, the reading asserts that the burning mirror was not required while Greeks were equipped to flaming arrow technology. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that this weapon was concealed and Roman’s soldiers didn’t realize the fire is coming from this strange mirror.
