The reading and lecture both discuss using the burning mirror as weapons by ancient Greek. While the reading provides three reasons to support that Greek did not use burning mirror as weapons, the professor refutes, saying none of these are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that the ancient Greek did not have advanced technology to build long copper sheet. So, the ancient people did not use the burning mirror as weapons tool. However, the professor argues this notion by saying that there is no need for single long sheet to use the burning mirror, but they can use small flat copper sheet to build long mirror. Furthermore, they can direct many small copper sheets to make big one.
Secondly, the article mentions that it takes long time like ten minutes to to put the ship in fire. Also, the ship should not be in moving position and it is completely impractical. On the other hand, the professor questions this idea by pointing out that about how long it takes to get the ship in fire in not true. In fact, they assumed that sitting the wood of ship in fire takes ten minutes, but there is other materials. For instance, there is sealing materials between the wood which is sticky water proof materials called bitch. Moreover, the fire can catch these substances very quick and the fire can spread so easily to the ship even though these ships moving.
Lastly, the reading states that the ancient Greek already had the fire arrows. So, there was not any need to build the weapons burning mirrors. Nevertheless, the professor contradicts this idea by explaining that the Roman solider were familer with the fire arrows. On the other hand, they can not see the burning that raises from the mirror. Consequently, the solders's ships will get into fire suddenly. As a result, the burning mirror is more effective than the flaming arrows.
