Base on the reading material, it is stated that using of the ' burning mirror' which is a curving polished copper surface to concentrate sun light is only myth and the Greeks never really built such a device. The author provided three examples to support of this idea. However, the lecturer finds this idea bereft of sufficient reasoning and provides some ideas to the contrary.
Initially, the author argued that the Greeks didn't have advance technology to build that device. Because, the mirror had to be wide enough to focus sun's ray for burning ships. That being said, the speaker repudiated this idea by clarifying that the ancient Greek didn't need to have advance technology for making mirror like that. They could make separated part of mirror and then they could attach them together to make a wider mirror for focusing sun light.
Another point mentioned by the writer was that catching fire process was too long and during this the object had to have stable condition. Therefore, it is unpractical because Roman ship changed their position when they saw the mirror. However, the professor discredited this idea by depicting that there was another material which used in ship like pitch. Pitch used as sticky material for making waterproofing ships. it caught fire soon, then this fire could burn another part of ships.
The final point advanced in the reading passage was that the ancient Greeks didn't need another device like burning mirror when they could use of flaming arrow to burn enemies' ships. Yet again the lecturer casted doubt on this idea. She said that using of burring mirror surprised enemy, because they didn't see the concentrating sun light but they saw only mirror and suddenly they saw fire in their ship.
