TPO 31: integrated writing task
The main topic of both the reading passage and the lecture is about the interpretation of a fossil of a dinosaur and whether the dinosaur had feathers or not. The author of the reading passage is of the idea that evidence does not indicate that those dinosaurs have a feather. However, the speaker takes a different view and claims that according to the fossil records Sinosuropteryx had feathers.
Firstly, the author mentions that the fine lines in the fossil are not an indication of feathers but they are decomposed skin of the buried dinosaur which have preserved as lines after the death of the animal. On the contrary, the speaker argues that the lines represent functional structures as fossils of other animals buried at the same site indicate that skin structure like functional structures preserves in ash.
Secondly, the author points out that if the lines represent the real structure of dinosaur we can not determine which part of the dinosaur's body they were as dinosaurs had some ornamental body structures which are called frills and were appeared at some parts of their bodies. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this claim by indicating that feathers and frills have different chemical compositions. The feathers contain a type of protein which is called Beta Karoten<span class="hiddenSpellError" pre="beta "></span>, however, the frills lack this protein. According to the chemical analysis of the fossil, the lines contain this protein hence they were feathers.
Finally, the author claims that feathers have a functional role in the animals' bodies. It helps them to fly or regulates their internal temperature. However, the location of the lines which are near the tail of the animal indicates that this structure was not functional. Hence, we can conclude that they were not feathers. By contrast, the lecturer rejects this interpretation by mentioning the fact that in some animals as peacocks feather has a display function. It is mainly for attracting a mate. She goes on to say that according to the researches the dinosaur had colorful orange and white feathers which approves that the feathers had a display function.
