The reading and the lecture are both about the fine line found in a fossil skeleton of a dinosaur in China. The passage offers three evidences to oppose the theory that the fine lines are not feathers. However, the scholar thinks all of the claims in the article are unconvincing, and she provides three refutations.
To start with, the reading points out that fine lines are not the functional structures of a living dinosaur but the structures of a dead animal. That is to say, fine lines may be the skin which decomposed into fibers. Nevertheless, the lecturer challenges the point by mentioning that functional structures also found in the same site, which shows that functional structures can be well preserved. As a result, the fine lines are definitely not fibers caused by decomposition.
Secondly, the reading passage contends that the fine lines may be the frills of dinosaurs instead of feathers. Nonetheless, the lecturer states that researchers found there are a kind of protein found in fine lines which also contained in feathers. However, frills don't have this kind of protein. Thus, fine lines are not frills for sure.
Last, the article maintains that the function of feathers is to enable animals to fly or regulate their internal temperature but the fine lines were mostly located along the backbone and the tail, which means helpless for flight. Conversely, the scholar put forth the idea by maintaining that peacocks have colorful feathers for the display function. Also, the scientists found the colorful orange and red lines in the backbone of the animals, which strongly supports the idea that the backbone feathers are for display function.
In sum, the professor effectively casts doubts on all of the claims presented in the article.
