The reading asserts that some plausible theories will be the cause of the sound which was produced in oceans. The lecturer, however, finds the ideas dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the reading passage.
The author argues the source of the sound was that of ocra whales during the courtship ritual. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that ocra whales lived near the surface while submarines were in deep oceans, therefore the possibility of hearing that sound is near zero. Moreover, if the reason for the sound was ocra whale, they should be detected by submarines.
Furthermore, the reading passage holds the view that the other likely reason for sounds might have been the giant squids which live in deep oceans. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that these strange noises stopped after two decades, although the squids still lived there. Thus it is not true that these animals generated the sounds.
Finally, the reading states that perhaps noises might have been produced by other country's submarine which was secretly controlling the area. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that those sounds were changing their direction rapidly, and also no engine noise could be heard. The professor asserts that until now, our technology has not improved in such a way that could have these fast and silent submarines.
