The main idea of both the passage and the lecturer is strange sound that soldiers hear in operation of patrolling was come from. Considering this, the author states that several theories about what might have caused the odd sounds. The professor, on the other hand, clearly challenges whatever contended in the reading by citing three logical reasons which shows uncertainty of assumption of reading.
First, both the author and the professor talk about weird sound come from male and female whales. As claimed by the passage, male and female whales when call each ether generate voices which were unusual. The lecturer explain that this theory is acceptable at first, but usually population of whales live in surface ocean. While, these noises heard in deep place of ocean. Another reason for rejecting this choice is whales detected easily by submarines' sonar.
Second of all, another theory that debated in both the passage and the lecturer is presence of giant squid. The passage goes on to maintain that giant squid are marine invertebrates that live deep in the ocean and difficult to recognize them by sonar. In contrast, the professor explains submarines report the sounds in 1960 and these sounds had continued until 1980. While, these creatures have lived until today.
The last point that the author and the lecturer discussed is create these noises by other military technology. The author asserts another country's submarines that secretly patrolling the area. However, the professor contradicts the author's view by explain that source of sounds change direction very quickly. While, engines can't produce noises which come from different directions. Also, there is no resemblance between sounds and engine’s noises.
