The passage talks about the possible theories of sea caw extinction. The author of the reading claims the three different theories; however, The professor holds a various idea and refuting reasons provided in the passage.
First, the reading mentions that one of the main reasons which cause the number of sea cows decrease can be attributed to the over hunting. The native Siberian people's demand to supply necessary food validate this theory. While, The professor casts doubt on the reality of the hunting of the sea cow more than need. He points that one sea cow have had 9 meter length and more than 10 ton weight, therefore, one sea cow could be enough for the people maybe until 1 month. As a result, people do not have required hunt the sea cow too need.
In addition, the passage says that climate change and ecosystem alteration before 1768 cause plants diminishing which sea cows have eat them for surviving. In the other word, decreasing the food for feed led to sea cow population decline. In contrast, the professor argues that if the climate change has happened before 1768 so we expected to observe decreasing in the other kinds of plants in that area. Meanwhile, if other types of plants had reduced, we would have missed many marine animals which feed them; whereas, there is not any evidence for this situation.
As a final point, according to the reading, European had started sea cow hunting as a fur trade. On the contrary, the listening rebuts the statement by pointing out that the sea cow extinction have been started lone before European beginning to fur trade. He indicates that this reason can justify that this theory could not be true.
In conclusion, the professor refused all reasons which supported in the reading by his opinion and perception.
