TPO 34

The reading specifies that there are three theories about the main cause of the extinction of the sea cow. However, the professor explains that we cannot find out what make sea cows extinct and presents some evidens to refute them all.
First, the article claims, sea cows were a good source of food for native siberian people. Consequently, they hunted many of sea cows and after many years they extinct. The professor opposes this point by saying that the sea cows were massive creature and weight ten ton and capturing couple of them could feed many people for a mouth. Also the population of native siberian were few and it was not vital for them to capture large number of sea cows.
Second, based on the reading, ecosystems disturbances which declined the main source of food of sea cows and these changes help its extinction. The lecturer asserts that if sever ecosystems disturbances happen and declined the main food of sea cow, it also change the population of other marine animal. But, native people did not record any food shortage. In other word, the ecological changes near Bering Island did not affect the sea cows' population.
Third, according to the reading, when European fur traders come to the island, they had many weapons that allow them to capture and kill sea cows and because of this sea cows extinct. The speaker contradicts the idea reasoning that the population of sea cows decreases before European fur traders come to the island. Hence, it was another main reason that trigger the reduction of sea cows population and European fur traders did not have a role diminish of sea cows population.
Therefore, the specific reasons mentioned in the reading do not make sense.
