The reading and lecture both are discussed about steller's sea cow which is huge marine mamma. While the reading stats that sea cow are lived siberia coast area they are extinct in 1768, but the reasons are unknown and provides three theories of extinction. However, the lecture explains that theories are problematic and lecture refutes each of the author's reasons.
First of all, the reading claims native siberian people overhunting are the main cause of sea cow extinct. The reading passage also say that sea cow are larger in size but long term over hunting are the main cause of extinction. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that sea cow are huge in size almost 9 'meters' and 10 'tons' weight. Siberia native people are very few number so they don't need to hunted over amount of sea cow. Furthermore, the professor stats that native people take one long month to eat a sea cow.
In addition, the reading make the argument that ecosystems are the major cause of sea cow extinction. Change of ecosystem are reduce the kelp population and kelp is the main food food of sea cow. So it possible that declination of kelp is the cause of sea cow extinction. The lecture refutes this point by saying that ecological disruption was occurs in 1768 that affect every element of that area not kelp population and sea cow. Welsh are related to kelp but no specific evidence that welsh are reduce.
Finally, the reading claims that european fur traders are hunting all the fish and they used weapons to kill sea cow's. But, the lecture are refutes this claim by pointing out that when fur traders are arrived this island the number of sea cow's are already declined so fur traders was not the main cause of sea cow's extinction.
