TPO-36

The reading and the lecture are both about a cloud seeding. The author of the reading provides the evidence which suggests cloud seeding is effective in protecting crops from hail. The lecture casts doubt on the argument made in the lecture. He thinks the Cloud seeding is not an effective measure.
First of all, according to laboratory experiment in the reading article, when the silver iodide is added to the cold water vapor, light snow is form instead of the hail pellets. The lecture opposed this idea.He suggests that the laboratory situation is different from the real situation. Silver iodide may prevent any the precipitation. It is the bad thing because seeding the area may reduce the availability of water. The crop may get damaged due to the lack of water.
Second, evidence from Asia, as suggests in the article states that the cloud seeding has been successfully used to control the hail in urban areas and could help to control it in the farm of the United States. This point is challenged by the lecture. He suggests that the Urban area is much polluted than the farm area in the US. Hence, cloud seeding may not be favorable on the farm of the United States.
Third, the author od the reading has provided the evidence of the local study. The study found that the cloud seeding has reduced the hail damage. However, the lecture, on the other hand, suggests that the cloud seeding has diminished the hail not just in an area where the silver iodide sprayed but also in the many areas. It suggests that the hail was reduced by the natural variation.
