The reading and lecture both discuss the possible explanations of the mass extinction at the end of Triassic period. While the reading provides three theories to explan the reasons behind that extinction, the professor refutes, saying none of these claims are convincing.
Firstly, the reading avers that the fluctuation of sea levels destroyed the ocean ecosystem and caused the mass extinction. On the other hand, the professor questions this notion by saying that the scientistis agreed that sea level fluctuation often going down is a good explanation of the mass extinction, but the water level can adopt it. Moreover, the change of sea level takes years to cause that effect. As a result, this fluctuation should be happened suddenly to cause this extinction.
Secondly, the article mentions that the climite cooling and the increase of sulferoxide level caused drop in the temperature. So, many animals and plants had been killed. However, the professor argues this point by explaning that the sulferoxide decreased the temperature, but this was just for short period. This is because though the time the sulferoxide cleared out of the atmospher. In addition, the sulferoxide can combine with water and go to the air as a rain. Consequently, the release of sulferoxide did not stay enough at the air to cause that extinction.
Lastly, the reading states that the asteroid hit the earth and released a lot sand in the environment that blocked the sunlight. So, many animals and palnts can not survive. Nevertheless, the profesor contradicts this idea by pointing out that there is no asteriod or any hit records dated to that time. Besides, the crushed collide happened 12 years before the extinction. As a result, nothing asteriod can do with this massive extinction.
