At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next 145 million years. We do not know exactly what happened that eliminated so many species in a relatively short period of time, but there are several possible explanations.
The reading and lecture are both about mass-extinction at end of Triassic period which disappears more than half of all living organism. The author of the reading feels that this phenomenon made the dinosaurs to dominate the species but not certain and had possible explanation of it. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He is on the opinion that many explanation possible but none of them are good enough for proved.
First, the author argues that decrease of sea-level and destroy of natural territory cause the vanish of the species. He also states that destroy of eco-system of that area made a crucial point. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He mentions the sudden change of sea-level was not possible and it happened over time. He also adds that coastal and fragile parts may adapt to this change and disappear is impossible.
Second, the author suggests that Triassic period was known for volcanic activity and this time-release sulfur-di-oxide which cause the lowering the world temperature. He also claims, this vast cooling environment caused extinctions. However, the lecturer rebuts this by sulfur-di-oxide is still presents in environment then how it changes the climate of the earth. Moreover, basic sulfur combine to the water and back to the earth as rain.
Third, the author posits that asteroid strike periodically to the earth and produce large amount of hole and scatter piece which blocks the sunlight. As a result, the plant does not get enough light to grow and the animal dies because of lack of food. In contrast, the lecturer position is that scientist surveyed that Asteroid hit theory is not correct and there was no proper evidence found. He also noted that the last Asteroid hit the earth which happened 12 million years ago before earth extinction.
