TPO-40: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how the proposal discussed in the lecture would solve the specific challenges described in the reading passage.
In the lecture, the professor proposes a solution to overcome the extreme situations on Venus that make it inhabitable for humans. Although as mentioned in the passage, living on Venus's surface is thought to be impossible, the professor suggests that by building a station which is floating in the atmosphere of the planet, we could ensure a habitable environment on Venus. Through this method, the challenges stated in the passage can be overcome.
To begin with, on a floating station about 50km above the surface of Venus, the extreme pressure would be reduced to an amount similar to Earth's pressure. Thus the challenge regarding high pressure that would crush anything related to humans landing on Venus would be solved.
Secondly, the passage issues that on the surface of Venus there are no traces of water. Also, the atmosphere of the planet contains very little oxygen or water vapor which is inadequate for humans. It is implied in the text that a constant supply of these two vital substances is required from Earth to maintain any viable station on Venus. However, the professor mentions that with regard to the chemical material already present in the atmosphere of Venus, such as carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, the essential water and oxygen can be made through chemical processes on the floating station. Through this, adequate amounts of water and oxygen can be produced without the need to import any chemical substances from Earth.
The third problem stated in the passage is that because Venus's atmosphere is shrouded with thick clouds, most of the sunlight reaching the planet is reflected. Whereas, on a station 50km above the surface, the layer of clouds is much thinner, thus more sunlight will reach the habitable station. Also, where the passage implies that the lack of sunlight prohibited humans to attain enough electrical power needed for their utilities, the professor argues that on the floating, ample amounts of sunlight can be gathered from both the sunlight reaching the station, and the light reflected from the layers of cloud bellow.
