The reading provides three theories about how agnostids, which were a group of marine animals that became extinct about 450 million years ago, may have lived; however, the lecturer believes that the passage's interpretation is open to dispute. Consequently, she tries to refute all of the theories persented in the passage by bringing up some cogent reasons.
First, the first theory claims that the agnostids were free-swimming predators. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on this theory by stating that all of the arthropods which were predators had large eyes, but the agnostids had poorly developed eyes and some of them were even blind. The lecturer states that some may argue that the agnostids may have developed some other sensory organs, but there is no evidence found in the agnostids' fossils that validate this idea.
Furthermore, the second theory argues that the agnostids were seafloor dwellers which may have survived by scavenging dead organisms or by consuming bacteria. On the contrary, the lecturer rules out this reason by talking about the fact that typical seadweller organisms cannot move fast, and they merely occupy a small geographic area. However, the agnostids lived in a multiplicity of geographic areas which is highly unusual for seafloor dewellers.
Finally, the passage asserts that the agnostids were parasites which lived on and fed off larger organisms. Conversely, the lecturer is skeptical about this theory and tries to repudiate it by explaining that the population of parasites is not large. If there were too many parasites, they would have killed the host. She adds that the evidence gathered from agnostids' fossils reveals that the agnostids were highly populated which contradict the theory of the agnostids being parasites.
