The reading and lecture discuss the discovery of very old fossil structures that resemble bee nests and belong to 200 million years ago. The passage presents three skeptics for why this structure doesn't relate to bees. Whereas, the professor refutes all of the reasons by pointing out his explanation.
First, the passage asserts that the earliest Bees' fossil doesn't have that age; indeed, it has been found about 100 million years ago. However, the professor argues against this idea because although this idea about the earliest bees' fossil is true, maybe there wasn't a suitable condition before that time for bees' fossil to preserve. Indeed, this may because of the lack of resins in that period's trees.
Second, the reading states there were no flowering plants in that period; thus, bees couldn't exist in the lack of them because of bees and flowering plants mutually dependent on each other. However, the lecturer disagrees with this idea and believes earlier bees may not dependent on flowering plants. In other words, they may feed on non-flowering plants like pine trees, etc.
Third, the reading states that the structures of discovered fossilized nests lack some fine details such as a spiral cap that is different from modern bees' nests. However, the professor denies this reason strongly, because although they didn't have spiral caps, there chemical evidence that they used similar waterproofed substances for building their nests. Thus, the structure relates to Bees for sure.
Although the reading presents three skeptics to dispute the opinion that the founded structure doesn't belong to bees, the professor in the lecture believes none of them are convincing.
