The reading and the lecture discuss possible advantages of using the electronic database for storing patient records. The passage claims that using electronic records has undeniable benefits. However, the speaker brings up three reasons to rebut all dubious idea presented in the passage and states that the writer has exaggerated about the upsides of electronic records.
First of all, the writer holds the view that it helps doctors to save money and time, since they do not need space for storing paper records. In contrast, the lecturer refutes this idea and underlines the fact that the electronic form of recording does not reduce need for paper working. In fact, most doctors who use this form of storing data use the traditional form of storing patients’ data as backup. Therefore, it does not cause any reducing cost, since they still need some space for storing the paper forms. In addition, patients signatures needed that can be collected in the paper forms.
Second of all, the author contends that electronic records reduce the number of possible errors. However, the speaker contradicts this contention and asserts that the factor of poor handwriting will not be removed in electronic records. Indeed, most doctors use pens for writing descriptions and their staff type doctor's handwriting. Therefore, the doctor's staff have interpreted with what the doctor has written.
Finally, the writer states that electronic records facilitate researching. On the contrary, the lecture rebuts this statement and stresses that the researcher’s access to the database has been limited by strict patient privacy law. In other words, researchers should ask patient permission for accessing their information, so researchers should follow many complicated processes to have access to patient medical records.
