There is a controversy between author and lecturer about whether it is beneficial for United States to use electronic forms of medical record systems or it is better to use the traditional paper works. The reading passages provides three benefits of using electronic form; however, the lecture refutes all of them.
The first benefit mentioned by the author is that by using electronic system, the need for collecting a huge amount of paper records will be eliminated which will result in reduction in the cost. Also, the doctors can easily transfer and duplicate records with no need to copy machines and faxing. In contrast, the lecturer mentions that the doctors who use the electronic system still need the papers for doing their legal and necessary signature. So, using electronic devices will not eliminate the need for papers and its matters.
Second, the reading claims that using electronic manner will reduce the probable errors which are made by illegible handwriting, improper transcription of data, and nonstandard organization of papers. On the contrary, the professor says that doctors always use the papers for writing the report of the patients even they use electronic system, and it is usually the duty of their staff to translate the information form papers to electronic device; therefore, using those devices will not prevent man made mistakes.
Finally, the article states that electronic records facilitate the scientist’s research because they are easy to access. On the contrary, the lecturer mentions that it is difficult to access the patient's information because of the privacy law, and the researchers need permissions to access them, and there is no guaranty for those permits.
