Although the author argues three main advantages for storing the medical information of patients in electronic databases, the professor finds them dubious and brings up three reasons to refute them all.
Firstly, the author argues that it would increase the costs by saving money on producing paper and the costs of faxing, copying and, transporting paper records. On the other hand, the professor gainsays this idea and states that although some doctors utilize electronic medical records, they still make use of papers for emergency backup. In addition, in some occasions, patients need doctors' signature and legal forms to represent their information. Thus, they still require paper-based records.
Secondly, the author holds the view that using computer-based records would reduce human errors such as poor hand writing, however, using computer databases, they are less likely to make mistakes. In contrast, the professor asserts that some doctors take notes while they are examining their patients and then enter them into the computer and in this case, they are more likely to make mistakes since some words are not legible during entering the data.
Finally, the author takes the view that electronic medical records would be used for research since they are assembled in precise format. However, the professor states that it is not as easy as the author thinks, because in order to access to this database, researchers should have legal permissions which are really strict and unachievable. Moreover, they require the permission of patients and some of patients do not agree upon using their personal information to conduct a research.
