The passage and the lecture discuss whether humpback whales navigate by stars or not. The reading presents three reasons that support the idea that they do so. However, the professor in the lecture argues against all of them and believes none of them are convincing.
First, the passage claims humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to navigate by stars. However, the professor refutes this reason completely because there is no connection between intelligence and the ability to use stars for navigating. He examples ducks that navigate by stars but they aren’t intelligent animals at all. Indeed, it is connected with the instinct of animals, not their intelligence.
Second, the reading states these whales migrate in straight lines which is possible just when they orient themselves by external objects or Force such as stars. While there isn't any landmark on oceans, humpback whales use stars to orient themselves. However, the lecturer argues with this idea by pointing out that although the whole idea about how they orient themselves is true, stars are not responsible in this case. Actually, it is Earth's magnetic field that helps the whales to migrate in straight lines by affecting their brains. In fact, they have a substance in their brains, called Biomagnetite, which helps them to sense the Earth's magnetic field.
Third, the article claims they show some strange behaviors like spy-hopping, floating vertically with their head above the water, that support the idea that they use stars for navigating. However, the professor opposes this reason by explaining that they don’t look upward to the stars. Actually, sky-hopping is a method that some animals like sharps exhibit to look for their prey, not to migrate or look at stars. Besides, they exhibit this behavior during the day when seeing stars is impossible. Hence, this behavior doesn’t relate to their ability to navigate by using stars.
