The reading discusses that humpback whales manage to migrate long distances by the stars. The author listed three factors to support this idea. However, the lecturer finds all the reasons unconvincing and presents some evidence to refute all of them.
First, the reading passage points out that whales' brain is complicated and they develope some cognitive ability to help them to navigate by stars. On the other hand, the speaker casts doubt on this issue and states that there is no connection between their cognitive ability and brain. Because other animals migrate too and its sense is accompanied by them when they born.
Furthermore, the author debates that animals such as birds migrate in the straight line, but whales under the water could not do it as their way are not straight under the ocean. In contrast, the speaker asserts that objects send some external force that could be felt by whales, it turns out it is earth magnetic which is called biomagnetic. Hence, whales use it to migrate not stars. Consequently, this idea is rebutted.
Last but not least, the reading depicts spy-hopping which means the whales look at the star for some minutes in it is very unusual behavior. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this idea, also, states that they do this action for looking for animals to hunt. The other evidence to prove this idea is during the day no stars can be seen in the sky, Therefore, their pure speculation is for vitality.
