TPO-49 - Integrated Writing Task Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: the

The article states that humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes and provide three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that the evidence stated in the article is not very convincing and refutes each of the author’s reasons.

First, the reading claims that the whales are intelligent enough to use stars to navigate and have a brain power greater than other animals. The professor counters this point by saying that other animals like ducks, whose cognitive ability is less, also use stars to navigate. He states that it must be an instinct that ducks are born with and do not require a great deal of intelligence.

In addition, the article posits that whales migrate in straight lines. They rely on stars as external forces to maintain direction over long distances. However, the professor claims that the external force that the whales experience is the magnetic field of the earth. According to the professor, the brains of the whales contain biomagnatite, which is sensitive to earth’s magnetic field .This helps the whales as external forces to maintain direction.

Lastly, the reading says that that the humpback whales exhibit the unusual behavior called spy-hopping, that is, floating straight up for minutes at a time, with their heads above water as though looking at the stars. The professor opposes this point by explaining that other animals like sharks also exhibit this behavior. We also learn that sharks do not migrate .Migration happens during the day and there are no stars to direct them then.
