Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: they may be navigating by the stars, much as early human sailors did. What we know about humpback whales makes this a distinct possibility.
The reading provides some evidence supporting the fact that humpback whales use stars as aids for navigation. Although the lecturer finds the idea attractive, he casts doubt on the reasons provided by the reading passage.
First, the author claims that according to high intelligence of humpback whales, they probably have established cognitive ability to use stars to navigate by. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that there's no definite relation between intelligence and using stars as navigation tools. To illustrate, some birds such as ducks have the ability to navigate by stars. However, these creatures have average cognitive abilities and this certain ability is merely related to their instinct rather than their intelligence. Thus, the fact that humpback whales are intelligent animals doesn't mean that they are able to navigate by stars.
Furthermore, the reading holds the view that humpback whales might use stars as external features to guide themselves on their straight line movement. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that humpback whales seem to use their senses to orient themselves. As these species have a certain substance in their brain which is sensitive to magnetic field, they may use Earth's magnetic field to find direction and orient themselves.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that a possible illustration for sky seeing behavior of humpback whales called spy-hopping is that they get information for navigation through watching stars. In contrast, the speaker dismisses the issue due to the fact that other sharks exhibit such behavior as well, but they don't migrate at all. Therefore, humpback whales don't behave this way to get information for navigation. Moreover, humpback whales also do spy-hopping during the day when there is no visible star in the sky. Therefore, this reason is not valid and well-supported.
