TPO 51- strange behaviors of elephants
In the reading, the author claims that there are some viable hypotheses about being strange behaviors of elephants by pointing out 3 reasons for support. However, finding the ideas questionable and implausible, the lecturer totally repudiates the claim and presents some evidence to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that older elephants know when they die. Therefore, the older elephants choose a place near water, which is called elephant graveyards, and alone live until their death. Conversely, the lecturer brings out the idea that the older elephants have trouble with eating different foods. According to her, they use the soft vegetation that has grown near the water due to the easy digestion for them.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that the elephants paint their trunk on the canvas. They also can draw flowers and other elephants. On the other hands, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying this fact that the elephants are so sensitive to train. As she mentioned, although they can train the drawing with human, their paints are made with line and other simple things, not intricate works.
Finally, the author asserts that the elephants fear mice as the last point for supporting the issue. The Pliny tested a herd of elephants with (a) several mice and as a result, the herd run away from the mice. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by pointing out that the elephants do not fear from mice. As she stated, the mice are unfamiliar for them. The researchers found that if the elephants grow in an environment which has several mice, they do not have any fear from them because of being familiar with the mice.
