The professor in the lecture casts doubt on the reading passages arguments, and she says each arguments can be challenging.
First of all, the readings paradoraph suggests that the taxes will discourage people from indulging in unhealthy behaviours. The professor argues that increasing cigarette and unhealthy food taxes is not a practical solution. Because smoker people will buy cheaper and lower quality cigarette which has even harmful subsistance, or people might continue to buy unfelt food even if they are expensive, thus they have lees money to buy hefty food.
Secondly, the reading passage states that taxing people who engage in unhealthy behaviors create extra income that can be used to cover the medical costs, therefore some of the financial burden is shifted from all of society to just those who choose to participate in the unhealthy activities. But the lecturer contends that some people believe taxes of this kind are not financially fair. Because high earning and low earning smoker or unhealthy eaters should pay the same taxes, hence many believe it is not fair for people with smaller incomes.
Finally, the author asserts that the taxes on cigarette and the purposed taxes on unhealthy foods, benefits every one because it’s increases revenue for the government and government use the revenue for other projects that benefit public welfare. While the professor proves that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that the high rate of taxation on cigarette has downside. In order to it has a lot of amount of money the governments will become depend on it, hence they will not implement law to eliminate unhealthy behaviors. For instance government ban smoking out side the building, but they allow people to smoke inside the buildings because they do not want to lose their income.
