TPO 53 Task 1
Both the reading and the lecture are talking about the results of the determination of higher tax for cigarette and junk foods, which are unhealthy for individuals. The reading bring up three outcomes, which is beneficial for people and government, while the lecture refutes them and states that this reason are not rational.
First of all, the reading claims that the taxes could prevent people from using cigarette and unhealthy food. In contrast, the lecturer reject this reason and says that this cause people use cheaper cigarette that is much more harmful for them than that one they usually use, causing greater risk, consequently. Moreover, it results in people spend much money for unhealthy products, having less money to allocate to their health.
Secondly, the text assert that this type of tax is beneficial in terms of finance.
Thirdly, the reading brings up that the taxes collected by this way could be use in improving different services like educational, medicals, to name but a few. However, the lecturer contradicts this idea by stating that it could easily make the government dependent on it, which results in the government does not pursue new policies to earn money in order to improve other services.
