Both the passage and lecture talk about the topic of reducing the salinity of the lake. In writing to solve the problem, three solutions, including evaporating water, adding ocean water, and building walls in the water have been elaborated. The professor, however, claims that these methods are unrealistic and unpractical.
As opposed to the writer's idea that the salt in the water can be directly removed by desalination facilities, the professor states that using this kind of device will lead to some health problems, she advances the theory by saying that When the facilities are used, not only will salt be left, but also other solid materials or chemicals are removed, including toxic ones, such as selenium, which is blew into the air by wind and breathed by people.
The professor continues to discredit the writer's assertion that salinity will be diluted with Pacific ocean water via pipeline, by examining the fact that it's difficult to construct pipelines. In detail, she points out that the local government who don't have sufficient resources to do this. And the nearest shoreline of the ocean from the lake is at least 1000km away, which is extremely expensive to build the pipeline over such a long distance.
It is the professor's third argument that building walls will be destroyed, which contradicts the view of the writer that salinity can be reduced with the construction of walls, separating the lake into big and small parts. She contends that this way is unlikely because this region has frequent geographic activists, such as earthquakes, which will destroy the wall. Once the walls are collapsed, the water used to be separated by salinity will mix back to its original state again, the movement is labor without results.
An apparent divide exists between the writer and the professor on the way to solving the salty lake problems.
