The main idea of both the passage and the talk is about the possibility of reducing the amount of salinity in the inland lake. The author provides three viable solutions for the mentioned problem to prevent the threatening effects of salinity for marine animals. The lecturer challenges all the mentioned ways and thinks that none of solutions is practical.
Firstly, the author states that by using special desalination facilities, the salt can be removed from inland lake. The lecturer, on the contrary, points out that desalination process can lead to various detrimental consequences. In this regard, she says that the some solid materials that are leaved behind after desalination could be very dangerous for human health if they scatter in the air.
Furthermore, the author asserts that transferring water from the ocean to lake can reduce the salt level since Pacific Ocean is 20 percent less salty than water in the lake. The speaker, in contrast, explains that construction of pipelines and channels are very challenging process, and it requires a great amount of money which is not affordable for the government. Because the distance between Pacific Ocean and lake is about 100km, it is not a practical way to pump water from the ocean.
Eventually, the author mentions that dividing the lake to small parts can be effective way to control the main lake's salinity. The lecturer, on the other hand, rebuts this claims and posits that the mentioned solution will not be efficacious since the wall will be destroyed by natural activities such as earthquake. Thus, the water for all the small sections will be mixed with the main lake.
