The Salton Sea in California facing an issue that the proportion of the salt has been increasing due to the extraordinary evaporation rate in the lake. In the reading passage, there are three possible solutions provided, then the lecturer gave her opinion and revealed the leak of them one by one.

The first proposal is to eliminate the salt from the lake’s water by a special desalination facility. However, the professor argues that this method probably arranges other problems. She mentioned that, even though the level of salt would be decreased, there are some other substances such as toxic chemicals, could be removed together and spread by certain ways like wind, then cause a health threat to the people in surrounding area.

The second suggestion is diluting the salt level by bringing ocean water into the lake. The professor against this solution by point out its possible flaw which is a need of high budget. As the professor mentioned, in fact, the shortest destination from the lake to the ocean is about 100km. Thus, this project which includes expansive pipelines will need a high sky budged, and apparently, the local government couldn’t be able to supply it.

The third solution in the reading passage is dividing the lake into sections by walls. The methodology here is the water in the major section will be refreshed by the water from small rivers, while the small sections will remain at the high salt level. Yet, the professor stated that this could only be a temporary solution. As frequent earthquakes would occur in this area, it will demolish the walls, then make the water mixed up again.
