TPO 54 - Integrated Writing - Salinity in Salton Sea
The reading and the lecture are both about the problem of increasing salinity in the Salton Sea in California. The author of the reading passage puts forward some options to tackle this. The lecturer, however, casts doubt on these suggestions. She believes they are unrealistic and impractical.
First, the author claims that the high level of salt can be reduced by directly getting rid of salt in water, using special desalination equipments. The lecture shows reservation toward this solution as she think it poses serious health risks to the local residents. She explains it is not only salt that is removed during the process, but also other chemicals including toxins that can spread into the air and bring illnesses to people.
Another solution suggested by the author is to channel water from the Pacific Ocean to the Salton Sea to reduce its salinity as the ocean water is lower in salt level, compared to the lake water. According to the author, this can be accomplished through the use of pipelines or canals. On the other hand, the speaker points out that the distance between the lake to the nearest shore are still too far for pipelines and canals to be built, not to mention the local resources will not be adequate for the high costs of construction.
Finally, the writer puts forward the idea that dividing the lake into sections by building walls would allow control over its salinity with the help of freshwater from nearby rivers. On the contrary, the lecturer argues that the walls will not be cost-effective in the long run due to extreme geological activities in the area. Once an earthquake takes place, the walls will definitely collapse and high salinity water from the small sections will flow back to the main section, which proves the walls meaningless.
