The professor casts doubt on the reading that Amtrak, an intercity service owned by the government, should be sold to a private company. He asserts that the United States government should keep the Amtrak.
First of all, in the reading passage, it is pointed out that government has lose money on many Amtrak routes because the routes are expensive to maintain and some routes are not frequently used. On the contrary, the professor maintains that the aim of Amtrak is to provide a needy system to the United States citizens regardless of how outlying they live from the city center. In other way, it means that the United States citizens have the right to live in an accessible area.
The professor then challenges the reading's idea that it is unfair for the government to own transportation companies since Amtrak's tickets are cheaper than private transportation. So, private companies have to compete against government companies. She suggests that the United States government has given funding to the airline industry. For example, they paid to build control tower and helped train control officers. Without the funding from the government, private companies would not exist.
Finally, the reading addresses that in order to support national transportation, the government should spend money elsewhere for the reason that rail traveling is unimportant. However, according to the professor, if Amtrack is fast and affordable, more people would stop to drive their car and turn to rail travel. For instance, train travel in Japan and Germany is popular. As a result, what the government should do is to use money to improve overall service of Amtrack.
