The reading and lecture are both about the great leader which is called Spartacus. The author of the reading presents three theories about the historical background of Spartacus's motivation to win that battle. The lecturer disputes the all claims made in the article. Her position is that none of them is showing represent the truth.
According to the reading, Spartacus had been forced to leave far away from Rome. The article mentions his aim for that fight was just to go back home. The lecturer challenges this argument. She claims that returning home overseas was not the only goal. Additionally, she points out that even though they won he rejected to return because his motivation was revenge and take all wealth of Rome.
Secondly, the author suggests Spartacus's success in battle made him a hero in people's eyes. In the article, it said that the Roman army was powerful and greatly financed compared with Spartacus's army however, Spartacus could manage the army brilliantly. The lecturer, however, asserts that Spartacus may have won a few little battles but that does not mean that he was a military genius. She goes on to say that Romans did not take him seriously, therefore, they had sent their little amount of army to defeat him, however, Spartacus send his best soldiers into war, therefore, he won the battle.
Finally, the author posits that Spartacus liberate roman slaves because he became an early human rights advocate. The author contends that even though roman senators have made an offer to him to become one of the elite members of Rome, he was rejected because of protecting the slaves' dignity. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is it was not the historical truth, it was just a play that is made up of 1800s century anti-slave. She notes that in the 1800s century they needed inspiration from ancient history to make a powerful anti-slave movement therefore they had written a play about him like he did this for slaves.
