The reading claims that now a day, the rare and important fossils are being sold to private ownership and its huge lose to science and private public. It provides three reasons for support. However, the professor refutes that point by saying that the benefits of selling of fossils out ways its negative impacts. She opposes each reasons mention in the passage.
First, the reading describes that public do not get chance to see the fossils as, the private owner do not allow public viewer. On the other hand, the professor explains that the public get greater exposer as commercial people sell fossils at very low price, so any school and library can afford it. They can display this fossil open to the public, so people get great exposure to it.
Second, the author mentions that scientist more likely to lose access to some of the important fossils and miss potential discovery about extinct life form. In contrast, the lecture claims that its not realistic point. Commercial people only can put value on any fossils, if scientist and experts identify it as valuable fossil. Scientist has to run enough tests and examination to approve it. Scientist get all scientific details related to the fossil first, therefore there is no chance to miss some important detains related to extinct life form.
Third, the article describes that commercial collector often destroy valuable scientific evidence associated with the fossils they unearth. The lecture claims that they do some damage while collecting fossils and they lose some data related to fossil’s position in the earth, but it’s more likely to get undiscovered fossils. Schools and universities do not run enough operation to discover fossils. Therefor it is better to get discovered fossils, rather than nothing.
Thus, the reading and the lecture counteract each other about the benefits of fossil selling to the commercial persons.
