Unlike the passage which suggests three benefits of the shortened work week, the speaker opposes these ideas by stating three reasons.

First, according to the passage shortened work week would increase company profit by reducing the costly errors due to over workload. As a result of reduced shift employees might feel more rested and alert during work. However, the professor argues that reduced work shifts would force an employer to hire new employees and might create a financial burden on the company. The company might spend more money on these new hires for training, office space, and computers.

Second, the passage claims that shortened employment hours might create job opportunity for more people, thus this would reduce the unemployment rate in the country. However, the lecturer says that instead of hiring new employees the employer might use other options such as offering overtime for existing employees or expect the same amount of work from the employees in fewer days. He posits that these situations might create an unpleasant work environment for employees.

Finally, the professor opposes the point mentioned in the reading that employees who work less shift could improve quality of their life by spending time with family, private interest or enjoying activities which they like the most. He says that a decrease in work shift would present some risk of job stability because shortened week employees might lose their job during downtime. She elaborates on this by mentioning that employers might offer five-day management positions to five-day working employees for continuous supervision and entire work week.
