The author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the accuracy of the actual owner of portrait. While the reading passage uses some reasons that the real possessor of the portrait is Jane Austen the well-known writer, the professor counters these specific points and presents some clues to call into the question for the information in the text.
First of all, the professor refutes the family members' approval after some decades, which in the reading part is nominated as one of the strong reason for its outlook. As the professor states this picture was printed in 1882, 70years after Austen's death, consequently, those family members had not seen her by themselves. As a result, their permission and certification are based on the vague information, and it does not fortify the hypothesis.
Next, the passage uses the fact of similarities among two pictures of Cassandra's sketch and the portrait; inasmuch as, although, in one of them the woman is a teenager and in the other she is an adult, these two are identical; so, the owner of them is Jane Austen. However, the lecturer doubts the truth of this claim. As he asserts the Austen family is a large family, and Jane had a lot of cousins who were in her age. Thus, the owner of the portrait can be one of these family members. Especially, he mentions two distant nieces as the possible owner of portrait.
Finally, the professor argues that the real painter of the portrait is Ozias Humphrey. Meanwhile, in the passage presumes that the style of this portrait is related to Humphrey style who worked at the period in which the Jane was a teenager. Based on the lecturer's evidence, the clothing used for the picture was sold solely by W.Leg. Besides, Leg did not sell this kind of clothing in England till when Jane was 27 years old. Hence, the owner of that teenager portrait cannot be that young Jane.
That is how the professor logically challenges the claim made in the article.
