In the reading passage, the author claims that there are three viable explanations for the advantages of applying salvage logging, as a practice in which the dead trees are conveyed from the areas of forest affected by the fire. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in text and states that regardless of its seeming benefits as a method for recovering the forest, this approach costs prolonged environmental damages and even its economic benefits are not realistic.
At first, the author argues that falling the dead trees on the bottom of the forest left no space for growing the new plant according to this issue that it takes the considerable time that trees get decomposed through the natural process. Conversely, the lecture brings up the idea that this decomposition provides suitable condition for nourishing new vegetation by enriching the soil. Indeed, if the dead body remove from the forest, the absence of nutrients in the soil will hinder the next plant generation's growth.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that presence of some insects renders the healthy trees vulnerable. On the contrary, the professor disputes this idea by clarifying the fact that although this issue is true regarding the trees, these dead trees are accounted as a proper habitat for other species including birds and insects as well that play a crucial role in establishing long-term healthy forest. Consequently, salvage logging deteriorates the circumstance.
Finally, the author asserts that industries can take benefits of dead trees to augment their productivity and decline the unemployment rate. The professor, thought, dismisses this point by subscribing the point that particularly in the severe fire, only a small segment of trees are usable; hence, its economic benefits will not last for a long time. Moreover, the workforce is not only temporary, but also this process requires applying the helicopter and other vehicles that are capable of transferring heavy trees that are so expensive. Besides, it needs individuals who are expert and experienced in this field that should be undoubtedly outsourced. Therefore, they cannot use local workforce.
