TPO14 integrated writing: Salvage logging
Both the reading and lecture discuss the advantages and disadvantages of salvage logging, which is the practice of removing dead forest trees after a disaster such as fire. The author believes that salvage logging is beneficial and provides three reasons, on the other hand the lecturer raises doubt on the points made in the passage and thinks that removing dead trees have long term detrimental envirenmental effects, and its economic influences are questionable. I explain the details of this contrast in the following paragraphs.
First, according to the reading, removing dead trees helps new trees to grow. Conversely, the speaker take the opposite opinion, and thinks that dead tree are good for future forest because they enrich the soil with nutrition.
Second, the writer states that dead trees would cause an increase in the number of some harmful insects such as spruce bark beetle. However, professor refute this idea by saying that in long run spruce are less damaging to forests than salvage logging since dead trees are used by other insects and birds, elimination of these trees is harmful to other species.
Finally, the author claims that removing dead tree have some economical benefits. While the lecturer rejects this notion and. states that removing tree should be done by helicopter which is a very expensive method. Also, the produced jobs for workers are temporary, and workers in this job need to have an especial training that the local workers do not have it.
