The focus of both the reading and lecture is on using ethanol, which is a fuel made from plants such as corn, as an alternative for gasoline. Despite the author's statement that ethanol is not a good and efficient alternative for gasoline, the lecturer holds an opposing view. He is of the opinion that ethanol is actually a good alternative and the reason mentioned in the passage is not convincing.
First of all, the author holds the idea that ethanol would not solve the global warming problem. It is mentioned that burning ethanol would produce carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas, and in result has no advantages compared to gasoline. The lecturer denies this notion and states that ethanol would not add gasoline to the environment. Furthermore, he argues that ethanol will release carbon dioxide to the atmosphere but it will be absorbed by the plants.
Secondly, the writer contends that most of the plants would be used to produce ethanol which will decrease the required food for the animal. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that producing ethanol does not have to reduce the amount of food for the animals. He elaborates on this by explaining that cell walls of the plants are used to make ethanol which is not eaten by animals.
Finally, it is claimed in the article that the actual price of ethanol is higher than gasoline. The author establishes that if the government omits the subsidies given to producers, the price of ethanol would be much higher than gasoline and will not be affordable by the consumers. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that in the future the price of ethanol would compete with the gasoline. He puts forth the idea that government subsidies always will not be needed since the increase in the amount of ethanol production will result in a decrease in the price of it.
