TPO24 Integrated Writing
The reading and the lecture materials have a debate on the discovery about a 70 million years old fossil of Tyrannosaurs rex. The writer believes that T rex’s fossil contain many actual tissues, which is refuted by the lecture.
First of all, the writer states that the scientists find some soft substance in the leg bone and they believe that this soft substance is the remains of the actual blood vessels of T. rex. However, the professor opposes this claim by saying that the soft flexible substance inside is traces of soft and moist residue after bacteria colonies. It is because after an organism is dead, bacteria sometimes colonize hollows in bones, which leaves behind traces of organic materials.
Moreover, the writer says that spheres with iron and red centers could be the remains of red blood cells, while the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. The professor says that scientists find the reddish spheres in fossils of other animals in the same place. So it cannot be the remains of read blood cells and it may be a pieces of reddish mineral.
Finally, the writer says that scientist found collagen, which is considered in connection with bone tissues. But the professor holds an opposite opinion: collagen cannot survive long time. And there is most likely explanation is that the collagen is not from T. Rex and it may come from the skin of the researchers who are handing the bone.
