The reading and the lecture discuss the likelihood of the set of clay jars excavated from Iraq as used as an electric battery in ancient times. The passage states three main explanations for why the vessel was not used as an electric battery. The lecturer, however opposes the viewpoints expressed by the author of the passage.
Firstly, the passage states that the absence of any conductor material like metal wire has negated the idea that the vessel could be used as a battery. The lecturer refutes this idea by stating that local people might have found wire but since it was uninteresting to them they would have not noticed. Likewise, they might have even thrown them away.
Secondly, the author mentions that copper cylinder which was excavated was similar to those found amongst the remains in city of Seleucia. There cylinder was being used a holder for scrolls. The lecturer rebuts this statement by clarifying that any ancient inventor might have found out that when iron rods and liquid in a vessel was used electric current was produced.
Finally, the writer of the passage averts that no devices existed in ancient times to work on electricity indicating its uselessness. The lecturer argues that if anyone touched the vessel might have an invisible power. Moreover, the electricity from the battery would probably have been used for its healing action by the ancient doctors for certain muscle pain.
To conclude the lecturer cast doubt on the ideas made by the author of the passage.
